BIG APPLE CIRCUS ANNOUNCES
APPOINTMENT OF GAVIN BERGER
AS
INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
        The Big Apple Circus,
America's finest classical one-ring circus, is pleased to announce the
appointment of Gavin Berger as its Interim Executive Director, beginning
April 15th. Mr. Berger has most recently been Director of Development
for the Consumer Reports Foundation, and is very familiar with Big Apple
Circus's operations through his previous positions at Lincoln Center as
Director of Concert Halls and in Lincoln Center’s marketing department.
        Mr.
Berger succeeds Gary Dunning, who has been the circus's Executive
Director since 1996 and who leaves to join Celebrity Series of Boston,
New England's leading performing arts presenter, as its new President
and Executive Director.
        The
Big Apple Circus trustees executive committee unanimously approved the
appointment of Gavin Berger, following his strong endorsement by Gary
Dunning and with the support of Artistic Director Guillaume Dufresnoy.
Mr. Berger brings considerable skills and experience from his work with
other large non-profit organizations such as the Kimmel Center in
Philadelphia and the Film Society of Lincoln Center, where he worked
with BAC trustee Dan Stern. Mr. Berger's good working relationship with
the senior management at Lincoln Center is a real benefit to the circus.
He also has excellent marketing and promotion experience as VP for
Events and Promotions at the Meadowlands Xanadu Center.
        "Gavin
Berger brings a solid record of accomplishments as he steps into his
new position at the Big Apple Circus," said Gary Dunning. "His
impressive experience and background in fund-raising, marketing,
production and management can only benefit the circus during this
transitional period." Mr. Dunning will time his departure from the
circus in order to provide as much overlap as possible with Mr. Berger,
to ensure a smooth transition.
        According
to Chris Wearing, Chairman of the Big Apple Circus board, "The circus's
search committee, led by board member Jimmy Zankel, is launching a
national search for a permanent Executive Director, for which Gavin will
be a candidate and a strong contender. Gavin sincerely appreciates and
understands the mission of the Big Apple Circus."
       Â
Stated Gavin Berger: “The Big Apple Circus is an important New York
institution that brings great joy and pleasure to so many through its
live performances and community works. I am honored to have the
opportunity to work for such an extraordinary organization and to
continue the exceptional work that Gary Dunning has accomplished over
the past 15 years.â€
