2010-11_Report-Eastern Vice President

CFA Report of the Eastern Vice President – Gary C. Payne

Districts 1,2,3,and 4 make up the eastern seaboard from the southernmost state of Delaware, north to Canada.  The Eastern Vice President depends upon the District Directors, Bob Goldsack, Gary Cooper, Dave Orr, and Mort Gamble to encourage communications, fellowship, and coordinated efforts in support of our CFA.  I have been fortunate to have enjoyed the presence and extensive traveling of the National President, Maxine House, in my region.  The reports of the Eastern Region Directors re-cap the specific activity of circus and CFA in their respective districts.  The participation of CFA’s Directors and State Chairman is integral to our operations.

Earlier this year, I advised my home Tent (Bluch Landolf & Fr. Jack Toner Tent No.24 – Hartford, CT) I would not seek another term as it’s President.  This, to create more time to devote to the office of CFA EVP.  Our Tent Nominating committee came up with a sensational new slate of officers, and for the first time in decades I hold no CFA offices in any Tent in my home state.  This change is not only healthy to the growth of Tent 24, it’s also a step I need to take to create time for the execution of my duties as your EVP and to promote CFA  for the period thru 2015!

The committee is being framed, 5 years in advance, of the (2015) National CFA Convention, for which I am responsible, and which will take place in the Northeast Region.  Our concept is unprecedented – A WorldWide Circus Summit!  More than a  “convention”, we propose to build bridges to the circus, it’s producers, it’s many associated interest groups, and to multi generations of fans from all over the world!  Such a tremendous undertaking required we start early and we’ll leave no stone unturned, no idea without consideration.  My Convention Chairman will be AF (Ret.) Brigadier General Bruce Hawley, and Co-Chairman, Lane Talburt.  We plan to ask the CFA board to endorse our proposal at the 2010 NY Convention, and we’ve already lined up much of our convention staff.

Just as the great circus lithographs of the golden years of circus were pasted about the countryside, our great magazine, The White Tops, continues to be THE communication tool, the paste of your CFA, most appreciated by the members of this region.  However, many Tents enjoy the benefit of great newsletters or meeting minutes. Of increasing importance are such social communication tools as FaceBook, the tool of choice for the circus world today.  Mort Gamble also stepped up the activity on our website, www.circusfans.org. .  Lane Talburt, a video producer, began to use YouTube to promote circus and CFA, for example, by covering a premier of the movie Water For Elephants, which was done for CFA members.  Such electronic means are of increasing importance to us.

Congratulations to CFA’s newest Tent No. 178 – The John Ringling North II/Steve and Ryan Tent, of Maryland!

Your EVP continued to serve as Chairman of your CFA’s National Animal Welfare Committee, writing a regular column “Preserving Animals in the Circus” for the White Tops.

My closing message to all concerns the importance of unity.  It’s important that we communicate with one another and act together as an “association” should.   Hence the “A” in “CFA”.  I call upon our members who don’t often travel or participate outside of their home Tent, to travel.  Attend a CFA Convention.  Lets work together to build bridges to future generations of circus fandom.
